Scholars ready for 2016/17 season opener
The EFL National Futsal League returns this week and scholars on the Community Sports Foundation’s Futsal Scholarship programme are all set to represent Norwich City FC nationally following a successful pre-season.
Runners-up last year, the Norwich City A team will kick off their campaign with a fixture against rivals Peterborough United at the Birmingham International Futsal Arena this Wednesday.
Norwich City B, a reigning regional division champion, will also take on counterparts from The Posh in their season opener.
Following a league restructure, both City teams will play in the Midlands Division for the 2016/17 season.
Opponents will include the likes of Leicester City, Wolves and Stoke City.
The Canaries have enjoyed a busy pre-season, with fixtures against Arsenal and Cambridge United, as well as competing in an eight-team tournament at the Birmingham International Futsal Arena in early September.
Over the course of the season, the Futsal scholars will have the opportunity to compete in the internal CSF Futsal League, with a select squad representing the club nationally in the EFL National Futsal League and the Kinder Cup.
The squads have been bolstered by the arrival of over 40 Year 1 scholars, who have been working hard to adapt to the sport of Futsal.
Futsal Co-ordinator Marc Campbell said:
“The application of the boys has been tremendous so far, they’ve been working really hard to prepare themselves for the new season.
“It’s brilliant to have the new year group in and we’re really excited about the season ahead – we can’t wait to get it underway on Wednesday.”
The Futsal Scholarship programme gives scholars the chance to combine an intensive futsal fixture and training programme with a 2-year BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport through Norwich City Football Club.
