Duncan's Club

Duncan's Club - supporting people with dementia

Duncan’s Club, our new support programme for people with dementia, is a 90-minute session every Thursday morning and afternoon at The Nest, in Horsford. It is the only weekly session of its kind for people in Norfolk with dementia.

Over 12,000 people in Norfolk are living with dementia, and there is a lack of regular support, with most groups only able to meet every 2-3 weeks.

Duncan’s Club, named after Norwich City’s iconic former captain Duncan Forbes, is a weekly session that includes mild activity, which has been proven to slow shrinkage of the part of the brain that deals with memory.

We are appealing for people to join our City Giving programme and give as little as £3 a month so that we can provide Duncan’s Club for free for participants.

Duncan Forbes - an iconic leader

Duncan Forbes - an iconic leader

Loved by supporters and teammates, Duncan Forbes was known for tough tackling, leadership, and his incredible warmth. This made Duncan one of the most iconic players in Norwich City’s history.

The Foundation’s club will provide support for people who are going through the same challenges with dementia that Duncan experienced in later life and like the man himself, the club will be a beacon of support and strength for those that attend.

Duncan's Club weekly sessions

Sessions are split into three delivery elements: Activate – to help participants stay physically active, Reminisce – using Norwich City as a stimulus to memory, and Talk – a social session in The Nest’s café.

The programme has been named after iconic Norwich City captain Duncan Forbes, who was affected by dementia in later life.

Sessions take place on Thursdays from 10:00am to 11:30am and 12:00pm to 1:30pm, and are free to join.

This element includes physical activity such as table football, chair aerobics or Kurling (an indoor version of Curling). It is aimed to use the benefits of activity to improve participants’ overall wellbeing.

With support from our friends at Still on The Ball, we’ll provide stimulus for participants to review and watch such as historic match footage, historic Norwich imagery, or old memorabilia. We also to hope to have guest appearances from former Norwich City figures for some special sessions.

We’ll close each week with a social element that includes drinks and cake for all those involved, including participants’ carers and family members.
