The playfield of Necton Church of England Primary School was transformed into a lively racecourse last month as pupils and staff came together for Run Necton, the latest instalment of the Community Sports Foundation’s popular Run Norwich Schools programme.
Designed to bring the excitement and atmosphere of the iconic Run Norwich event directly into schools, the initiative gives young people the chance to enjoy a fun, inclusive and active fundraising experience on their own doorstep. Just as importantly, it ensures a lasting impact, with 50% of all funds raised going back to the school to secure a class set of iPads, while the remaining 50% supports the Foundation’s vital work with disabled and disadvantaged individuals across Norfolk.
And Necton Primary certainly made the most of their event, raising a phenomenal £2,770.50 with a special mention to the top fundraising pupil, Erin who raised a staggering £380.

Despite a truly mixed bag of weather, the enthusiasm of the school’s community never wavered. From early showers and blustery winds to bursts of sunshine, Run Necton had it all! None of which phased the pupils as they took on their run in their year groups with energy and determination, cheered on by classmates and staff.
Adding to the special atmosphere, BBC Radio Norfolk were on site throughout the day to capture and broadcast the excitement.
Necton’s young runners were also treated to inspiration from GB athlete Logan Smith, who attended the event to support and encourage the pupils as they took on their run. His presence proved a real highlight for many, offering them the chance to meet an elite athlete, learn more about the dedication and passion behind sporting success and have the chance to win a pair of his racing trainers. Smith spent time interacting with the children, leading the warmup, celebrating their efforts and reinforcing the Foundation’s message that sport is for everyone.

As if the day wasn’t already memorable enough, Necton Primary was also hosting an Ofsted visit on the day, giving inspectors a unique opportunity to witness the school community in action. The event provided a powerful snapshot of the school’s commitment to pupil wellbeing, physical activity and community engagement, all key pillars of the Run Norwich Schools initiative.
Leading from the front, was headteacher Mrs Long who joined pupils on the course. A passionate supporter of Run Norwich, having taken part in the city race on numerous occasions Mrs Long’s involvement embodied the spirit of the day and reinforced the importance of taking part together.
Head of Fundraising, Emma Fletcher-Dungay said:
“The Run Norwich Schools programme continues to grow, offering more schools the chance to experience the buzz of race day in a safe, inclusive and enjoyable environment. Events like Run Necton highlight the powerful impact of combining physical activity with fundraising and community spirit and we’re delighted so many schools are choosing to get involved.”
