Ashleigh Primary School came alive with energy, determination and togetherness in May as it hosted its second Run Ashleigh event, part of the Community Sports Foundation’s Run Norwich Schools programme.
Following the success of the first Run Ashleigh in 2024, the event once again brought Run Norwich’s race excitement into the heart of the school, uniting pupils through physical activity while raising valuable funds for both the school and the Foundation’s work across Norfolk.
A total of 490 pupils took part in this year’s Run Ashleigh, embracing the challenge with enthusiasm on what proved to be a baking hot day. Undeterred by the soaring temperatures, children gave their all as they tackled the course, supported every step of the way by the Foundation team, school staff and volunteers from the school’s PTA.
This year’s event was a key highlight of the school’s wider ‘Belonging Day’. To reflect the ethos of the day pupils took part in their school houses, adding a fun and competitive edge to the occasion while reinforcing the importance of teamwork and inclusion.
Among the many highlights of the day, one moment stood out as a true reflection of Ashleigh Primary’s values.
A pupil who is a wheelchair user completed the course on foot, supported by a heartfelt guard of honour formed by fellow pupils. The emotional moment captured the spirit of inclusion, determination and kindness that underpins both the school and Run Norwich Schools programme.
It was a powerful reminder that these events are about far more than running. They are about building confidence, celebrating individuality and ensuring every child feels they belong.
Run Ashleigh also delivered on its fundraising goals once again, raising an incredible total of £7,888.50 to be shared equally between the school and the Foundation. The school has already outlined plans for these funds to be used to enhance its outdoor space, improving the area for pupils to enjoy during their lunchtime and break periods.
Alongside the inaugural Run Ashleigh in 2024, this means an incredible total of just under £19,000 has been raised across the two events.
Reflecting on the day Hannah Meek, Assistant Head Teacher, said:
“This event brought us together as one community. The inclusive feeling and enthusiastic team brought us so much joy and children felt a real sense of achievement. We were amazed by the slick planning and organisation which made it a day where school staff could prioritise building relationships over worrying about logistics! We are blown away by the amount of money raised but even more excited by the sense of togetherness and achievement the event brought to us all.”
