Summer Cup takes place over sun-drenched weekend

Over the weekend, 1600 young footballers took part in the Community Sports Foundation’s Summer Cup sponsored by McDonald’s Norfolk.

In soaring temperatures at Redmayne Playing Fields in Norwich, over 200 teams competed across seven age groups for the prestigious title of Summer Cup Champions.

There was drama in several finals including the Under 9s, when Gorleston Falcons took advantage of a late penalty to beat Old Catton Tigers 1-0.

A single goal was enough for North Walsham who triumphed over Surlingham Tornadoes in the Under 10 final while a similar margin helped Dereham Town defeat Scole Lads to win the Under 13 competition.

The Under 12s was won by Firside Inter with East Coast Warriors finishing as runners-up while Sprowston Girls Under 12s topped the table in the girls’ round-robin event.

Finally, Blundeston Magpies got two teams to the Under 11 final with the A team eventually getting the better of the B team 2-0.

In between matches, players soaked up the festival atmosphere with inflatable activities, ping pong and music while CSF provided free taster coaching sessions.

Norwich City legend Adrian Forbes modelled the new Community Sports Foundation kit in association with Macron Store Norwich, while spectators got into the spirit of Wimbledon finals weekend by enjoying strawberries and cream which were sold to raise money for the Sporting Light Appeal.

The Appeal raises money for disadvantaged people and those with disabilities to enjoy the benefits of sport and several disability participants took part in training sessions at Summer Cup on the Saturday.
