An epic day on the North Norfolk Coast in aid of the Community Sports Foundation

Over 100 determined walkers took to the North Norfolk coastal path on Saturday 13th June, raising £22,000 so far for the Community Sports Foundation through two inspiring challenge events; Race Against the Sun and the Coastal Walk Challenge.

From a gruelling 47-mile endurance hike to more accessible distances of 26.2, 13 and 5 miles, participants of all ages and abilities came together with a shared goal, to reach the iconic lighthouse at Old Hunstanton and make a difference along the way.

Sunrise: The Race Against the Sun is on

For those taking on the ultimate test, Race Against the Sun began before the sun had even risen. With registration opening at 3.30am, walkers gathered in darkness as GPS trackers were distributed, routes explained and safety briefings completed. Then, at approximately 4:20am, as the first light crept across the horizon, participants set off to the sound of crashing waves and music, creating an unforgettable start to an extraordinary day.

They were rewarded almost instantly with a spectacular sunrise. But with the sun rising behind them, there was little time to admire it. There was, after all, a race on.

Testing Terrain and Tireless Determination

The first stop came just over seven miles at Weybourne beach, where walkers were greeted with fruit, drinks and pastries, supplied by Swash Nosh before tackling one of the most dreaded parts of the route, Cley shingle bank.

Three miles of unstable ground tested both physical stamina and mental resilience:

“That was hideous” one participant remarked. A sentiment shared by many, as each step seemed to slip backwards.

Relief came upon reaching firmer terrain at Cley, with options for a restorative hot drink at the village hall, while others pushed on to Morston, where bacon rolls and a warm welcome awaited at mile 17.

Here, long-time supporters Up & Running Treatments and Runners Remedy provided essential support, helping to check feet, ease sore muscles and keep walkers moving. Also, on hand at Morston, and indeed throughout the route, was an army of MyClub volunteers, playing a crucial role in uplifting spirits, refilling water bottles and providing snacks.

One element, however, proved impossible to manage: the relentless headwind.

Coastal Walk Challenge Joins the Journey

Morston also marked a significant moment in the day, as participants in the marathon-distance Coastal Walk Challenge began their journey.

With walkers as young as 10 years old taking part, the event showcased a truly inclusive community effort. Together, they set off across the marshes of Stiffkey, heading toward the shared destination of Hunstanton.

A welcomed stop at Wells Town Football Club provided a much-needed boost, with an impressive spread curtesy of Swash Nosh. Refuelled and refreshed, walkers ventured into the wooded stretch beyond Wells, grateful for the temporary shelter from the unyielding wind.

Milestones Along the Coast

The route continued to test endurance as participants passed key milestones:

For many, the closing miles through Holme-next-the-Sea proved particularly tough, as soft sand added an unexpected challenge, just when energy levels were at their lowest.

A Triumphant Finish in Old Hunstanton

But perseverance paid off.

As the Old Hunstanton Lighthouse finally came into view, emotions ran high. Walkers from both events, covering every distance, were welcomed with refreshments, including drinks from Duration Brewing, burgers and hot dogs from Swash Nosh and, most importantly, their finisher’s medal.

A Community Effort

The success of the day was made possible thanks to the support of numerous partners alongside our Orange Army of MyClub volunteers, both out on the course and at our rest stops. Our thanks to:

Making Every Mile Count

Beyond the miles covered and challenges overcome, the true achievement lies in the impact of the funds raised. Every step taken on Saturday will help the Community Sports Foundation continue its work with disabled and disadvantaged individuals transforming lives through sport.

From pre-dawn starts to sunset finishes, Saturday 13 June showcased the very best of community spirit, resilience and determination.

An unforgettable day and an incredible achievement for all involved.
