It’s been another season of success for the Community Sports Foundation’s (CSF) Futsal squad not only on the pitch but in the classroom, too.

The Norwich ‘A’ ‘B’ & ‘C’ teams won their respective South East divisions comfortably, while the ‘D’ team finished third in League 3. All four sides qualified for the EFL Football League National Finals which took place at the International Futsal Arena in Birmingham.

Norwich City ‘A’ (pictured below), who were unbeaten in League 1, reached the final at the Nationals but despite a solid performance the squad lost to Grimsby Town. The ‘C’ team also reached the final but were beaten by Preston North End.

The ‘B’ team topped the group stage but lost in the quarter final to eventual winners Grimsby Town B, while the ‘D’ team, who are made up of predominantly first years, finished third having faced some competitive sides.

Earlier in the season, the Canaries successfully qualified for the Kinder Cup which took place at the Derby Arena in March.

CSF Futsal Coordinator Marc Campbell said:

“It’s been a really impressive season for the lads, we have seen a huge improvement in the technical and tactical ability of all of them.

“We are in fact the only club to have all four teams qualify for the National Finals and I think that says a lot about the boys’ commitment and dedication to the sport.

“We hope that come September this year, with even more new recruits, we can have the same impact and continue to develop. The discipline of the players, in terms of behaviour on the pitch, has been spot on.”

Standout individual performances from across the season include Robert Turner and Hayden Ingram who finished the season with a combined total of 63 goals. George Yusuff also finished as one of the league’s top goal scorers, racking up 12 goals, an impressive tally as a first year.

The educational side of the course has also gone from strength to strength, the Year 1’s have completed their first year of study and are on track to achieve fantastic results.

The Year 2 scholars have completed a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and their FA Level 2 coaching badge, which will offer them a variety of opportunities for the future.

Five of the Year 2 students will now go on to complete a sport degree at University, one student has been offered a scholarship in the USA and six scholars will now be working as part-time coaches at the Community Sports Foundation.

One of those, Brad Fisher, said:

“The Futsal programme has offered me the opportunity to not only study at a professional club but to also represent Norwich City FC nationally in league and cup formats.

“I feel I have been given the best platform to pursue my coaching career and am looking forward to the season ahead.”

Alongside their studies, the scholars have been able to boost their CV by volunteering at various CSF programmes and events. In addition, they have been involved with the National Citizen Service where they took part in social action projects to help improve the training facilities they use for the CSF internal futsal league.

The squad also have the opportunity to carry out fitness, strength and conditioning sessions at Riverside Leisure Centre on a weekly basis.

With two new 11-a-side football programmes starting in September – the East Norfolk Elite Football Programme, and the Norwich City Elite Football Development Programme in partnership with Easton & Otley College – plus an expanded Futsal programme provision, over 180 scholars aged between 16-18 will be able to study at Norwich City Football Club in 2016/17.
