Schools come together to celebrate World Book Day

Norwich City Community Sports Foundation welcomed three primary schools to The Nest on Thursday morning to celebrate World Book Day 2026.

Through the Foundation’s Premier League Primary Stars programme, which uses high‑quality delivery to inspire and engage pupils, over 50 children representing Wensum Junior, Bignold Primary and Magdalen Gates Primary Schools took part in football‑themed literacy activities designed to build confidence, creativity, and a love of reading. The event formed part of the programme’s targeted Tackle Literacy interventions.

The day began with a special appearance from Norwich City Women’s goalkeeper Holly Mears, who spoke about how reading has shaped her journey. Pupils had the chance to ask questions, hear about Holly’s experiences, and learn how reading supports her performance on and off the pitch.

Foundation mascot Sportasaurus also made an appearance, while participants joined the National Literacy Trust’s Great Big Footy & Booky Quiz. This year’s quiz featured footballers, authors and journalists to inspire pupils and put their knowledge to the test.

Workshops throughout the day gave pupils hands‑on experience in football journalism. BBC Radio Norfolk commentator Chris Goreham shared his top tips for live reporting, helping pupils bring football moments to life. Another session focused on match reporting, where pupils analysed Norwich City games and crafted their own reports, using key buzz words to enhance their writing.

The event highlighted the power of football and Norwich City to make literacy fun and accessible for children in a supportive, engaging environment.
