On the Buzzer, City! lights up the Lion & Castle

Thursday 7th November 2024 saw the return of the Foundation’s very own charity quiz; On the Buzzer, City!

For the first time, this year’s quiz was hosted in Carrow Road’s ‘The Lion & Castle’ Bar, situated below the Barclay Stand. With 32 teams in attendance, it was a lively atmosphere on arrival, as teams selected a table and set to work on the two ‘Table Rounds’; Guess the Brand and match the celebrity to their birthplace.

Toby Nickerson, Head of Community Engagement at the Foundation, took charge as quizmaster for 2024. With a little help from pre-recorded video clips featuring City players, Toby expertly led our teams through eight rounds of challenging quiz questions.

The opening four rounds covered Norwich & Norfolk, History, Film & TV and Geography, with Norwich players Shannon Shaw, Ashley Barnes, José Córdoba, Gabriel Forsyth and Ante Crnac all delivering a question to our teams via the internal screens at the bar.

Completion of these four rounds marked the halfway point in the evenings proceedings, with nine teams separated by only five points. During the break, our On the Buzzer! quizzers of 2024 made the most of their food tokens, bought raffle tickets and took part in our usual Heads or Tails game, with the last player standing walking home with a signed Borja Sainz 24/25 training shirt.

With stomachs full and spirits high, it was time for part two of the quiz – this time with rounds on General Knowledge, Sport, Music and a special Neil Adams’ Bonus Round which featured plenty of Norwich City-themed questions. This time it was defensive duo Ben Chrisene and Callum Doyle who lit up the big screens at the Lion & Castle with some testing questions, as our teams had one last skim-over of their answer sheet before locking in their answers for the final time.

While the scores were tallied, the much-anticipated Foundation live auction kicked off, featuring signed memorabilia from men’s team players José Córdoba, Callum Doyle, and Josh Sargent. The auction alone raised over £600! But the excitement didn’t end there—our raffle offered over twenty lucky quizzers the chance to choose from a fantastic range of items and gift vouchers.

With the fore-mentioned Neil Adams’ Bonus Round (a separate one-rounded competition), it was up to the speedy arithmetic of our team to count the scores from the remaining seven rounds and determine who the champions of On the Buzzer, City! 2024 would be.

With just three points separating the top three it was The Quizzer Sisters who ultimately got their hands on the much-coveted On the Buzzer! trophy, fighting off stern competition from the ATC Crew and the Away Dayers.

In total, On the Buzzer, City! 2024 raised a fantastic £5,500 for the Community Sports Foundation and will go towards helping us inspire the disadvantaged and disabled across Norfolk.

Everyone at the charity would like to thank Orange Fox Electrical for returning to sponsor this year’s event, your immense contribution is much appreciated.
