Giving Me a Purpose: Malcolm’s Padel Journey

When Malcolm first heard that new padel courts were being built at The Nest, he was intrigued. Having previously played tennis and badminton, he was looking for a new challenge that would keep him active, help him stay fit, and prove that it is never too late to learn a new skill.

That opportunity came through Pad-All, Norwich City Community Sports Foundation’s fully inclusive, free 10-week padel taster programme at The Nest, made possible by the Premier League and PFA Players’ Fund.

Designed for people of all ages and abilities, Pad-All offers participants a welcoming introduction to one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, with a focus on enjoyment, confidence-building and social connection. Despite some initial nerves, Malcolm quickly found his feet on court.

“I was keen to try a new sport. Like anything new, you feel a little nervous at first, but once I got the hang of it, I felt really comfortable and started to enjoy it straight away.”

What began as an opportunity to try something different soon became a regular part of Malcolm’s week. The sessions gave him structure, motivation and a new sense of purpose.

“I definitely felt more motivated when I knew I had padel coming up. During the 10-week programme, it gave me something to look forward to each week. I had to get myself organised, get ready to play and it really gave me a purpose.”

Pad-All is more than just an introduction to a new sport. The programme helps participants become more active, meet new people and build confidence in a supportive environment.

Once participants complete the taster programme, they are signposted to Foundation Padel, allowing them to continue their journey on court and remain part of the growing padel community at The Nest.

For Malcolm, one of the biggest benefits has been the friendships he has developed along the way.

“I’ve made new friendships with other players through the sessions. It’s been great meeting people who enjoy playing as much as I do.”

The physical benefits have been significant too. Since joining the programme, Malcolm has noticed improvements to both his fitness and coordination, while regular activity has helped him feel more energised throughout the day.

“The programme has made me a lot fitter and my coordination has improved. My upper body has benefited as well and after playing you feel much more energised for the rest of the day. It gives you those happy endorphins and leaves you feeling really positive.”

As padel continues to grow across Norfolk, Malcolm believes the programme has opened the door to something that will remain part of his life for years to come.

“Pad-All has made me very happy. It has given me the opportunity to start playing a completely new sport and continue playing regularly. I’m really grateful for that.”

Malcolm’s story highlights the positive impact of Pad-All. Thanks to the Premier League and PFA Players’ Fund, the programme is enabling more people to discover the benefits of padel, make new connections and lead healthier, more active lifestyles.
