Joe, a second-year student on the Foundation’s Football & Education programme at Carrow Road, enjoyed a day he will always remember on Saturday 23 May as he represented England Schoolboys U18s in a 6-1 over Wales at Cirencester Town FC.
The call-up followed a long trial process and an anxious wait for the final squad announcement. Joe recalled the moment with great excitement and pride.
“It was a really proud moment,” he explained.
“I first saw it on social media and I was in the car with my mum at the time, so I told her straight away – she was really happy. I rang my dad as well and it was an excellent feeling.
“It was a good experience traveling to the game, meeting new players and coaches. It was a long journey to Cirencester and the preparation was really unique.
“We prepared thoroughly for the fixture – we held meetings online ahead of the game to analyse clips and discuss tactics.
“The coaches emphasised that it is a moment you might never experience again. Just go enjoy it, express yourselves and have fun.”
Wales took an early lead, but Joe and his teammates responded with confidence and control. Joe himself managed to secure two assists on the afternoon.
“After they scored I got a bit worried and thought it was going to be a long day, but after about five minutes I could see we were going to get back into the game. We had a good group of players and we were confident in scoring.
“My first assist was a corner that I clipped in which our defender headed past the keeper. The second one came from pressing high, nicking it in midfield and laying it off to our striker to finish.
“I just felt very proud and happy to be there with all those players and the coaching staff, with my family and friends watching me play in an England shirt.”
Joe credits the Foundation’s post-16 Football & Education programme for helping him reach this point. The course combines daily training with academic study and personal development, supported by experienced coaches and teachers.
“Everyone at the Foundation has been very supportive,” Joe added.
“The coaches have helped me greatly and I would not be in this position if it was not for the development I have had here.
“The course is definitely something I would recommend to people. I have had a fantastic two years here with some great memories.”
A proud moment for Joe, his family and everyone at the Foundation.
