On March 18 our Cerebral Palsy National headed to University of Northampton to play their final three league fixtures of the season.
The team sat second in the table with two games in hand on league-leaders Northeast Yorkshire, who were three points ahead with just one game to play.
On paper, the task was simple: win two of their last three matches and finish with a superior goal difference, or claim seven-or-more points from the nine available to remove any doubt and guarantee the National CP Football League title.
The Canaries’ first game was against West Bromwich Albion, who were calmly dispatched 3-0 to ease any early nerves.
Next up was a strong CP Northwest side who were third in the table heading into the weekend. Despite the slight scare of conceding two goals, Norwich remained as prolific as ever, scoring five goals of their own to ensure a comfortable enough victory.
While this game was going on, Northeast Yorkshire played their final game of the season knowing anything other than a win would see them lose grip of any chance at the title. Despite the best efforts of Chelsea Foundation Yellows, NEY CP FC emerged 4-3 victors after a nervy affair.
Norwich would have to wait an hour before their final match of the season against Derby County Community Trust CP. Nerves were subdued and confidence exuded as Norwich fired seven past Derby in a 7-1 win to ensure the silverware was Norfolk-bound!
Disability Development Manager, Darren Hunter said:
“I’m so pleased for the lads to clinch their first National League title.
“They have worked so hard to achieve this and showed great resilience to win their last three fixtures on Saturday.
“I’m sure this success will encourage young players in Norfolk with Cerebral Palsy to get more involved with the game.”
The victory means that our CP Football team will now travel to St George’s Park on June 25 to take part in the FA Disability Cup 2023, which will be shown live on BT Sport!
A huge well done to all of the players and coaches involved in this incredible achievement!
