Participants from the Foundation’s Street Life Soccer (SLS) programme took part in a football tournament at the Football Development Centre (FDC) in Bowthorpe last week.
Twenty seven players from the programme joined a team from an NHS Mental Health support group to celebrate the end of the 2017/18 season and upcoming summer break.
CSF Social Engagement Development Officer David Shade said:
“Today was an excellent example of what Street Life Soccer is all about – creating a social environment for people to enjoy playing football competitively but in a sporting context.
“The benefits for those on the programme and to everyone who took part in the tournament go far beyond football. Their confidence and self-esteem has improved, they’ve learnt about responsibility and teamwork and that it is possible to have fun at the same time.”
Street Life Soccer is funded through the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities fund and works with people who can be described as one of the following: homeless, vulnerably housed, seeking asylum, refugees, ethnic minority groups and offenders / ex-offenders.
The project also provides preventative work for those at risk of becoming homeless with the opportunity to learn new skills, gain qualifications and integrate with new peer groups, weekly football coaching and National Open College Network accredited training. This approach supports progression into further education, volunteering, training or employment.
