St. Augustine's Primary will represent City in national competition after tournament win

Not even Pele got the opportunity to play on Wembley’s famous turf, but for children of St. Augustine’s RC School in Costessey that dream could become a reality.

The primary school were victorious last week at CSF’s ‘Champions Day’ tournament and will now represent Norwich City in the Kinder+Sport Football League Kids Cup.

The tournament, held at the FDC in Norwich, saw eight ‘champion’ primary schools from across Norfolk go head-to-head to determine who would represent City in the national tournament.

A thrilling day of action culminated in St. Augustine’s beating Catton Grove Primary School in the final.

The Kinder+Sport Football League Kids Cup, which is free to enter, sees thousands of schools from across the country given the opportunity to represent their local Football League club.

The inclusive format of the Cup sees girls take to the field for the first-half, with the boys playing in the second-half. Results are decided by an aggregate score of the two halves.

St. Augustine’s Primary can now look forward to the next stage, to be held in early March. Hosted by Reading FC, the school will take on teams representing the likes of Fulham, Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic.

Should they finish in the top six in Reading, St. Augustines will take part in the finals on Wembley’s famous pitch, prior to the Championship Football League playoff final in May.

Joe Harvey, CSF Schools Officer, said, “It’s a fantastic prize for St. Augustine’s Primary School. We work closely with the school through our School Sports programme, so it’s great to see them get this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

“Fifty schools from across Norfolk participated in the School’s Cup this year, so even qualifying for our ‘Champions Day’ was tough enough.

“We’ve seen some fantastic football. Eight hundred children, including four hundred girls, have taken part this year and what has been particularly noticeable is the great spirit that the games have been played in.

“We look forward to taking St Augustine’s to Reading!”
