On the Buzzer, City! returns to the Lion & Castle

On Thursday 6th November, 23 teams of keen quizzers took to Carrow Road’s ‘The Lion & Castle‘ for the return of the Foundation’s charity quiz; ‘On the Buzzer, City!’

Sponsored by Orange Fox Electrical, this ever-popular quiz has now been running for over ten years, with a few of the most eager participants attending pretty much every event to date.

2025’s quiz began in usual fashion, as our teams took their seats and began pondering this year’s table rounds featuring some rather familiar Norfolk-born celebrities and iconic East-Anglian landmarks.

Debuting as quizmaster for 2025 was the Foundation’s Head of Fundraising, Emma Flecther-Dungay, who called for silence and kicked off proceedings shortly after 7:30pm. Eight rounds of whispered debate followed, as our teams tested their general knowledge across a wide array of different subjects and topics.

The opening four rounds covered Food & Drink, History, Film & TV and Geography, with Norwich City midfielder Pelle Mattsson delivering his own bonus Film & TV themed question via the internal screens in the Lion & Castle.

The Film & TV round was followed by the half-time interval, in which tickets were purchased for the customary Heads or Tails game, with the winner walking home with a £100 Blakely Clothing voucher.

The break in proceedings also saw the 23 teams make the most of their food-vouchers, which could be handed in at the bar to claim delicious ‘Brick Pizza’ and fries.

With stomachs full and spirits high, it was time to continue with the quizzing. Part two saw rounds on General Knowledge, Sport, Make the Connection and Music, with two further special video questions from Canaries duo Mathias Kvistgaarden and Jovon Makama.

One final 30-second countdown gave our teams just enough time to jot down any final answers, before the army of fantastic MyClub volunteers collected the quiz papers for the final time.

As our team tested their arithmetic skills by adding up the final results in double quick time, quizmaster Emma was on hand to keep pulses racing with the live auction.

Because of the ‘C-shaped’ nature of the Lion & Castle, the auction bidders had to make sure they were heard loud and clear from either side of the room, with Foundation staff frantically running from side to side to show off the fantastic auction prizes up for grabs!

The live auction was followed by the raffle, with the lucky winners taking home a whole range of different vouchers and prizes.

With the nights proceedings now drawing to a close, it was time for the big reveal, with the final scores now tallied up.

With just four points separating the top three, it was The bald one supports Barnet who clinched the silverware, just pipping Trust Us and Public Sector Challenge Norfolk (10th July) to the title.

As is tradition at On the Buzzer, City! there was also the award of the ‘Wooden Spoon’ for the team finishing bottom, which this year was Ketts Rebellion, who collected their wooden utensils in good spirits!

This year the event raised over £4,000 for the Community Sports Foundation – a truly remarkable amount. All funds raised will go towards helping us support disabled and disadvantaged individuals across Norfolk.

The Foundation’s Head of Fundraising, Emma Fletcher-Dungay, was over the moon with the success of the event:

“Thank you to everyone attended our 12th annual On the Buzzer, City! quiz. The atmosphere in the Lion Castle was brilliant and events like this always have such a positive impact on our future community work.

Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who helped out on the evening. We hope to see everyone back again next year.”

Everyone at the charity would like to thank Orange Fox Electrical for returning to sponsor this year’s event, your immense contribution is much appreciated.

A special thanks must also be given to all the sponsors who donated prizes for the raffle – your support is greatly appreciated.
