Local high school students don neon bibs and paint for annual festival

The Community Sports Foundation (CSF) held their first ever glow-in-the-dark handball tournament on Friday as part of this year’s Premier League 4 Sport (PL4S) Festival.

Over sixty students from Northgate High School, Stalham High School, Great Yarmouth High and Iceni Academy, joined the Foundation at the UEA Sportspark for a day of sporting fun.

The teenagers played a number of different sports, including badminton, basketball and table tennis, before the lights went out and the students got a chance to try their hand at a game of handball – in the dark.

Lining the courts and nets with fluorescent tape and wrapping the ball in UV tape, the players took to the court wearing neon bibs, glow bands and UV paint, accompanied by hit music blasting out of the sports hall sound system.

CSF Sports Development Officer, Toby Nickerson, said:

“The Festival is a fantastic opportunity to invite young people from our Community Hub Schools to come together.

“The ‘glow’ handball tournament was certainly a hit and has created a real wow factor with everyone involved here today.

“The students have embraced the opportunity to do something a bit different and we are looking forward to delivering glow sports in our future offerings.”

The Festival is intended to celebrate the PL4S programme, a Premier League initiative which promotes youth participation in new and different sports.

The event is the second of its type to be run by the Foundation following a successful inaugural event in 2015 where special guest, and former City player, Dean Ashton joined in with the games alongside a basketball freestyler and an all-action table tennis robot.
