Pupils enjoy five-star treatment at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester

Pupils from Firside Juniors and Wymondham High represented Norwich City in the Premier League Schools Tournament in Manchester on Tuesday May 20th.

In Manchester City’s state-of-the-art Etihad Stadium, the schools played fixtures against representative teams from other Premier League clubs.

Both schools had been selected to represent the Canaries after winning the Community Sports Foundation’s Schools Cup.

The teams were drawn into four groups of five, with two qualifying from each group for the knockout rounds.

Firside Juniors, playing in the mixed U11 category, and Wymondham High, Norwich City’s U13 Girls representatives for a second consecutive year, enjoyed fixtures against Aston Villa, Everton, Fulham and Chelsea.

Firside Juniors finished fourth, whilst a strong girls group saw Wymondham High place third, drawing with eventual winners Everton along the way.

Both Firside Juniors and Wymondham High got to enjoy the authentic Premier League experience, getting to wear the Norwich City club kit, using the Manchester City dressing rooms and walking out of the tunnel to the Premier League anthem – even having their matches officiated by Premier League officials.

Coach travel and an overnight stay at a Manchester hotel only added to the Premier League gameday atmosphere for the participants – as did playing in front of BBC’s Match of the Day cameras!

Joe Harvey, CSF Schools Development Officer, said: “We all had a fantastic time in Manchester. The students were brilliant – a real credit to not only their schools and teachers but also to Norwich City Football Club.“

The Schools Tournament was founded eight years ago to increase boys and girls participation in football. Each of the Premier League clubs stage their own regional competitions and select an Under 11s mixed team and U13 Girls team from the schools to represent them at the finals.

Over 90 schools across Norfolk entered for Norwich City’s berth, as part of the CSF Schools Cup.
