Former City midfielder joins City Legends for May 20 fundraiser at Carrow Road

Former Canaries midfielder Philip Mulryne will return to the Carrow Road pitch for the upcoming charity match between Norwich City Legends and Inter Forever on May 20.

Mulryne, who is now a Roman Catholic priest in Newbridge, County Kildare, will dust off his boots for the Aviva-supported game, which will celebrate 25 years since the Canaries’ memorable run to the third round of the UEFA Cup.

The Northern Irish midfielder joined the Canaries from Manchester United in 1999, and enjoyed six seasons in Norfolk, in a spell that included a Division One play-off final, and promotion to the Premier League in 2004.

He was capped on 27 occasions for his country, scoring three times.

Following a decision to take a year out of the game in 2009, Mulryne rediscovered his faith, and upon retirement, he turned his back on football and joined a seminary to train as a priest – a move that was widely publicised across the sports world.

He was ordained as a deacon in 2016, and as a priest in West Belfast last July.

The game will raise funds for our Build The Nest campaign.
